Shop Primer - How to Purchase & Apply This Coating to be More Profitable in Your Painting Operation
Steel fabricators and industrial painting operations in general usually purchase a great deal of one product, which is shop primer. Shop primer is a simple, yet effective way to paint steel and give it a minimal amount of protection. No, it is not a superior high performance coating, but there are several things to keep in mind when you go to purchase this mainstay product for your operation. Keep in mind volume solids. In layman terms, volume solids refer to the amount of material contained in the coating that will not evaporate. For instance, if one product contains 50% in volume solids and another contains 25%, in theory you will have to purchase twice as much of the lower volume solids product in comparison to the higher volume solids product to get the same coverage. Typically, a good quality shop primer will contain over 50% in volume solids. Look for a shop primer that is in this range of volume solids. Many times, you can purchase this better covering shop primer for an equal or slightly higher price. This could cut your paint expense in regards to shop primer in half over the course of a year. Also keep in mind the amount of dry film thickness (DFT) your painter is applying. Typically, shop primers are specified to be applied around 2 dry mils. If you have a shop primer that contains 50% in volume solids, your operation will need to apply 4 wet mils to the surface to achieve this. If this product is being applied too heavy, this could increase your cost over the course of a year dramatically. Don't discount the importance of spray tips, either. If you don't change out your tips accordingly, the spray pattern on an old tip will cause a significant loss of material. After all, you are not buying this product to paint your floor. Be pound smart and pennywise foolish when it comes to spray tips. By purchasing and changing out spray tips in a timely manner, you will ensure the coating will be applied correctly with much less waste. You might even get a large discount from your paint supplier if you buy your spray tips in bulk, which will again save your operation even more money. Keep these three tips in mind when it comes to purchasing and applying shop primer. With just a little effort, you can decrease your paint material expense and increase your overall profitability.
