Universal Metal Primers - A Huge Benefit for Steel Fabricators And Industrial Painters

Universal metal primer has been out on the market for sometime now for steel fabricators and industrial painters to purchase. I am often still surprised that most companies do not realize some of the benefits these types of products offer. I have listed below some of the many benefits of universal metal primers.

One point you need to remember is that these primers are different from metal shop primers. While shop primers are usually only able to receive an alkyd industrial enamel topcoat, universal metal primers can receive a variety of topcoats. It is also a much higher quality product that provides more protection for the steel or metal.

These primers can usually be applied on an SSPC-SP2 / SSPC-SP3 (hand & power tool clean) surface preparation. This is a huge benefit if your operation does not have the ability to perform a SSPC-SP6 (Commercial Blast). Depending on the topcoat, you will need to contact your paint manufacturer for the individual coating system requirements.

Many times your company might have a customer that wants a urethane topcoat, usually a two-component urethane. That is great, because the quality universal metal primers on the market right now can receive multiple component topcoats, including urethane. This can make the priming process of the metal or steel much simpler. Universal metal primers can also be purchased at very good price points, which allow your operation to keep costs down when it comes to priming.

Don't discount the quality of single-component, high-performance coatings on the market. They can make things simpler for your painting operation while providing the protection you need. Make sure to contact your paint manufacturer to see what they have available, especially in regards to universal metal primers.
